Mullein tea has become particularly popular recently due to it’s many benefits, including respiratory support, antioxidants, cough relief, aids in ear infection healing and it’s anti-inflammatory. We add a few other herbs to our tea and we often drink it as iced tea, but it can be a nice hot tea as well!
We add both marshmellow root and licorice root as well. Before you go and get turned off, you licorice hating folks…I TOO HATE LICORICE! This tea does not have the fainted taste of licorice and I encourage you to try it his way and add other herbs to your liking.
Marshmellow Root Benefits
While we add the marshmellow root for it’s cough, cold, sore throat and respiratory benefits, it’s worth mentioning that it also can aid in inflammatory bowel diseases like Chron’s and ulcerative colitis, indigestion, stomach ulcers and skin inflammation.
Licorice Root Benefits & Warnings
Searching the internet I’ve found some mixed reviews on who should and shouldn’t be taking licorice root. It seems if you have any hormone related cancers or issues, as well as heart related disease or failure you should steer clear of the stuff. I encourage you to discuss with your doctor versus taking my google searching as your live and die by advice.
However, we use licorice root because it adds a sweet component to the tea and it’s know to potentially have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. As a result, research is suggesting that it may ease upper respiratory infections, treat ulcers, and aid digestion.
Ingredients
**Note: I make my tea mixture first, then use that for the tea, so this will be a 2 step process.
Mullein, Marshmellow Root & Licorice Root Tea mixture – yields about 1/2 gallon mason jar
3 3/4 cups Mullein Leaf Tea
3/4 cup Marshmellow Root
3/4 cup Licorice Root
1/2 Gallon Glass Mason Jar
Tea Ingredients
1 Gallon Glass Jar with Lid for fridge storage
1-1/2 to 2 cups of Tea Mixture
6 cups filtered or distilled water (We use our Berkey water! Post about it here)
Stainless Steel pan for boiling water
Glass measuring cup to pour
Funnel
Cheesecloth
Directions
- Mix together the tea mixture ingredients and set aside.
- Pour water into stainless steel pan and turn heat on high. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, add 1 1/2 to 2 cups of the tea mixture (We like 2!) to the boiling water. Reduce heat and let boil for 6 minutes.
- Immediately remove from heat and strain using the cheesecloth into any container that can pour. You may let it cool slightly, or continue.
- Using your funnel, pour your mixture into your gallon container for final storage. It should fill up about half way. Top it off with 5-6 more cups of filtered or distilled water. Place in fridge to cool.
If you want hot tea
Simply steep like you would any loose leaf tea and enjoy! My favorite tea steeper here!
