Homemade Snacks for Kids
For a long while I’ve been trying to accumulate healthy homemade snacks for kids (and adults alike!). This one has been on a strong rotation for a few years and I’ve made tweaks for variations that have tested tried and true. You can turn these into homemade blueberry muffins or banana chocolate chip muffins or my kids favorite, straight up chocolate chip muffins.
Recently I tried a variation with applesauce instead of bananas for flavor profile and it was a hit! Variations are listed below the recipe try. It’s the perfect way to repurpose the same recipe and keep it different so no one gets bored.
Homemade Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
1 cup of all purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour (optional, you can also just replace with AP)
1 teaspoon baking soda (NOT BAKING POWDER!)
1 teaspoon sea salt
3 ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 cup greek yogurt, plain
1 egg
1/4 cup honey
1 tablespoon avocado oil
1 tablespoon milk of choice (I use whole milk)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup of chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 350º. Spray your muffin pan or use liners and set aside.
- Mix your flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl and set aside.
- Mix you wet ingredients: bananas, yogurt, honey, avocado oil, milk and vanilla.
- Pour wet ingredients into the flour mixture and mix well. Fold in chocolate chips.
- Distribute into muffin pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on the top.
- Remove from oven and muffin tin and let cool on wire rack.
Variations
I don’t like bananas: You can sub applesauce for bananas. You’ll need roughly 1 1/2-2 cups.
I want chocolate on chocolate: Good news! You can sub 3 heaping tablespoons of cocoa in place of some of the flour. You may need to add a little more honey.
I need more fruit: Sub any fruit, like blueberries, strawberries or even raisins in place of the chocolate chips
Add nuts: This is always an option to mix it or sprinkle on top before baking.
